Prime numbers and divisibility

Lesson 1.

A prime number is a whole number greater than 1 that can only be divided by itself and 1. The smallest prime number numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, eleven, 13, 17, xix and 23.  The number 2 is the only even prime number.

Example:

7=1�7  The number 7 has but two factors: 1 and itself.
eleven=ane �xi  The number xi has only two factors: one and itself.

Composite numbers:   A blended number has more than 2 factors. Blended numbers tin can be broken downward into prime factors.

Example:

6 = ii �3  two and 3 are prime numbers.
20 = 2 �2�5  2 and v are prime numbers.
35 = 5 �seven  v and 7 are prime numbers.

Prime number factors:    Find the prime factors of 30.

30 = 2 �3�5

The prime factors of thirty are the numbers two, 3,  and 5.

  • Begin with the lowest prime number that is a gene of 30. Dissever by ii to get the cistron 15.
  • Now apply the lowest prime number that is a factor of 15. Split by three to get the factor five which is as well a prime number.

Divisibility of numbers:
